Playdate Ottawa

Yesterday we held Ottawa’s very first Playdate. No, it's not what you're thinking… there wasn’t a bunch of adults running around throwing balls at each other, although this would be fun, it was not that type of playdate.

Playdate Ottawa (People Learning Asking whY Digital Age Teacher Exploration) was a place where educators could play with technology and truly see how it could be implemented within their classrooms. So often we go to workshops and professional development sitting listening to someone speak about all sorts of great ideas,  but never get the chance to have a hands on experience. This was the driving force behind Playdate. The idea of Playdate came out of Chicago by a group of teachers who wanted to give participants the time and space to explore educational technology. We were very fortunate to have a couple of these founders (Jennie Magiera and Sue Gorman) join us for an introduction and welcome in the morning. It was a great touch to get everyone excited to Play.

I must say, the day went off without a hitch. Everywhere I went, people were showing, sharing, collaborating on ideas. Some had strong technology backgrounds while others have just started to warm up to tech. It was great to have this mix as it led to rich discussions that all parties could grow from.

So, how was the day setup? We had different break out rooms that educators could go to play and learn about specific topics (Google Scripts and Addons, Augmented Reality, Assistive Technology, Screencasting, Movie making, Digital portfolios to name a few). We created (with the help of Playdate Chicago) digital resource guides for participants to follow to give them a starting place about the tech they wanted to play with. Each break out had a lead who help facilitated the flow of playing and learning. That’s it! Pretty simple yet extremely effective.

Would I help run another Playdate? Absolutely! The feedback has been very positive with many asking when the next one will be… stayed tuned we hope to make it an annual event!

Playdate Ottawa 2014... It's coming June 7th

No presenters. No agendas. Just playing.

What is Playdate Ottawa?

This is a new kind of PD - No presenters. No agendas. Just playing. Think about the last time you attended PD, a conference or another professional learning event. Often, we leave full of knowledge and a list of new things to try out. As technology becomes more of an interest and priority in education, we get lists full of new apps, programs and skills to try out. However, once we return to the "real world" of our classrooms, many of us lack the time and support to actually try out all these new tools. Playdate Ottawa is a space for us to come together and collaboratively explore the tools we've always wanted to learn more about. The concept is to invite educators from around the area to join together for one day, sit in rooms together for a few hours and just play! We will collaborate about EdTech apps, programs, tools and strategies with one another. There are no presenters in the room, no experts and no agenda. Join us for time to play, tinker, explore and learn together.

Getting Started with Twitter

Educators often ask me about Twitter. The biggest question I get asked is "How do you know who to follow?" My answer is always the same... It depends on what kind of information you are looking for! Not very direct or clear I will admit. There is so much fantastic professional development all over Twitter on various topics, it really does depend on what your focus is. My main focus is the integration of technology to access curriculum through creating content. I am particularly interested in accessibility for all students regardless of any exceptionality they may or may not have. To me, it's all about a level playing field. So with that being said, I decided to make a short list of some educators I feel are worth the follow. The list below are some of the greatest educators that contribute to their PLN's with meaningful content. They have a ton of a great ideas and are always willing to help out. To me that is what Twitter is all about - Sharing and helping each other out. So, to the list below, Thank you! To those of you new to Twitter, give them a follow. I promise you won't be disappointed.
